Efficient and versatile, an Earth Oven will enhance the flavour of everything you cook in it, from bread and pizzas to soufflés and roasts.
Earth Ovens are based on a vernacular tradition proven over several thousand years and which is still found in many parts of the world such as Mexico, the Mediterranean and the Middle East.
All aspects of earth oven building will be covered, including choosing suitable soils and other materials, siting, plinth construction, firing up and cooking equipment.
Together we will build an Earth Oven using soil dug straight from the field. A mixture of clay-earth and sand will be puddled into a malleable texture, then moulded over a sand form which is later hollowed out.
An Earth Oven in the bakehouse will be fired continually over the weekend for cooking and baking so that participants can find about suitable recipes and methods. Everyone will cook their own pizzas in the oven for Sunday lunch.
The workshops are held at the Old Chapel, Brierley Hill, in the hills above the border town of Presteigne, Powys.
Bed and Breakfast or camping is available within walking distance at the farm down the road or in Presteigne itself.
